Budget & Creativity
Poor relationships, ignorance of technology and unrealistic delivery schedules impact on budget and creativity, and post houses then have to clean up the mess.
Which brings us back to what appears to be an insoluble problem: how to marry a tight budget with loose creativity? The answer is:
Systems
The most glorious creativity rests on the strongest systems – it’s a trapeze artist twirling confidently in mid-air – because there’s a strong safety net of systems below.
Camera systems, DIT systems, Sound, Script supervision, Editorial systems, Post house systems. A huge interrelated net.
You construct your systems by finding the best information from people who know their own discipline and you test the systems before you begin. Doesn’t matter how small the project – test the systems.
You get that information from talking early to the right people: your post houses, the crew, your colleagues.
Then Producer, Director and Editor can be confident that whatever creativity they wish to do:
- they’ll be able to find the footage,
- the metadata will be in place,
- the formats and codecs will be correct,
- the technology has been tested, and
- they have the tools to cope with the hiccups and move through the workflow to their finished film.
It all comes out of talking.
